You’ll find answers to some of our most commonly asked questions below, though for more information we encourage you to explore the other sections of our website as well as our lively Facebook and Instagram pages for a sense of what we’ve got going on right now.

Why Should I Send My Child To The Waldorf School Of Jordan?

The main reason is that the Waldorf School of Jordan honors and protects the wonder of childhood. We do everything we can to provide a safe, secure and nurturing environment for our students, and to protect their childhood from harmful social influences.

Second, the Waldorf School of Jordan is part of the largest and fast-growing network of independent schools in the world--with over 3,000 schools in 90 countries, and more than 100 years of teaching excellence.

Third, Waldorf Education teaches every subject when children are most ready and by using the best methods for each age. This ensures that students keep their natural curiosity and develop the self-confidence they need to thrive.

Homework for students in grades K-2 will be voluntary, at the discretion of the classroom educator and in collaboration with the parents. Both the Home Class teacher and the Language teacher in Grades 2 and 3 will assign homework. Rather than assigning homework on a nightly basis, teachers will typically assign weekly projects.

Fourth, Waldorf Education has a history of producing students who are academically advanced compared to students from other systems. Our graduates consistently gain admission to top universities.

Finally, the Waldorf emphasis on creative exploration, hands-on activities, and each child’s unique interests is designed to teach our students how to think, not just memorize. We inspire our students to develop a genuine love of learning that will stay with them for life.

What Distinguishes The Waldorf School Of Jordan From Other Schools?

The Waldorf School of Jordan combines the best of the Waldorf educational philosophy with the highest standards of international school excellence. Waldorf Education focuses on the development of the whole child, and Waldorf teachers strive to help each child realize his or her full potential. We offer a truly well-rounded education that engages students’ hearts, minds, and imaginations.

Other distinctive qualities of the Waldorf School of Jordan include:

• Our Homeroom Teacher system means that the same Homeroom Teacher stays with his or her students for the full year and leads them through most of their lessons. The Homeroom Teacher serves as a caring mentor who knows each student intimately and can cater to their individual needs across the curriculum.

• Topics like art, music and drama, literature and crafts are central to everything we do at the Waldorf School of Jordan. All subjects are introduced through creative, hands-on activities that stimulate children’s natural curiosity and mental development.

• Waldorf students compose several of their own mini-textbooks over the course of the year. These books allow our students to creatively record their experiences and reflect on what they’ve learned in each class. This ensures that students have plenty of study-and-review time, and learn to express themselves fully as they explore their own unique interests.

• Waldorf Education focuses on more than just grades and exams. We make sure that students understand their lessons deeply, not simply that they can pass a series of tests. Our teachers provide written personal evaluations of each student and share them with parents regularly. This allows our students to build on their strengths and improve their weaknesses without the harmful stress of testing or rankings.

• The Waldorf School of Jordan offers our parents many opportunities to be involved in their child’s education. You as a parent can sign up to lead story-time, present activities related to your career, or help coach sports or other special activities. We also host regular “School Family Evenings” during the year, where our parents and teachers explore school issues and discuss future plans in an open and relaxed atmosphere.

• The Waldorf School of Jordan is committed to helping you raise your child as an energetic, responsible, and community-minded human being. This is why we emphasize daily “clean-up” times for all grades, a daily “family meal” where students and teachers enjoy a healthy and delicious hot lunch together, and various environmental and community service activities throughout the year. Our teachers are inspiring role-models who work hard to teach our students not only their academic lessons but important life lessons as well.

Music, movement and drama are used to teach basic math skills, as students learn to count out numbers and move to their rhythms. This creative approach means that students remain engaged and excited by their lessons at every age. Waldorf Education is all about educating the whole child and getting them genuinely excited about learning.

How Many Waldorf Schools Are There?

Waldorf Education is the largest and fastest growing network of independent schools in the world. The Waldorf philosophy is that great education must be carefully tailored to each culture and specific situation, but Waldorf schools are all inspired by the same great educational philosophy that started nearly 100 years ago. Waldorf schools constantly learn from each other through the many associations that provide educational resources and publish teaching materials.

The Waldorf School of Jordan is the latest addition to this family of exceptional schools, and we are proud to be among the first Waldorf schools in the Arab world.

What Kind Of Education Do The Teachers At The Waldorf School Of Jordan Have?

Teachers at the Waldorf School of Jordan are our most important asset. They are trained to be the pillars of every student’s education. All teachers at the Waldorf School of Jordan are university graduates. They are experienced, and trained in the Waldorf educational philosophy. Each teacher is a loving mentor and role-model for students to look up to and learn from. By far their most important qualification is their dedication to teaching and love of their students.

Speaking in Oxford in 1922, the founder of Waldorf Education Dr. Rudolf Steiner de ned the “three golden rules” for teachers: (1) to receive the child with gratitude, (2) to educate the child with love, and (3) to help the child achieve self-confidence and freedom. The faculty and staff at the Waldorf School of Jordan are dedicated to upholding these principles in everything that they do.

Is The Waldorf School Of Jordan An Art School?

The Waldorf School of Jordan is an accredited academic school that integrates the arts into teaching across the curriculum. Many research studies have shown that the inclusion of art and music increases student achievement in traditional academic areas such as math and science. Waldorf schools around the world use art as an intensifier for academic learning, helping bring every lesson to life. By combining the academic and the artistic, our students are invigorated by the educational process. They learn with their whole selves and in a way that stays with them for life.

When And How Does The Waldorf School Of Jordan Introduce Reading?

Waldorf Education aims to produce passionate readers who continue reading for pleasure throughout their lifetimes. Waldorf teachers begin teaching reading during the Kindergarten years by teaching letter names and sounds through an artistic approach of drawing, painting, movement and speech. Stories are developed for each letter, and our students work with the shape of each letter in several mediums. This fun and creative process engages children with great interest, and by the end of first grade our students are tackling sentences and short texts with love and fluency. This approach to teaching language has been proven to build a solid base for advanced comprehension and vocabulary skills in later years.

What Are The Waldorf School Of Jordan’s Policies On Computers And Technology?

We believe that technology should play a role in educating your child at the appropriate developmental stage, after he or she has mastered the basic skills of learning and thinking. Research has shown that introducing technology into classrooms too early may harm children’s natural, creative and curious way of relating to the world.

What Is The Waldorf School Of Jordan’s Approach To Teaching Math And Science?

Science education at the Waldorf School of Jordan begins with direct nature experiences in Kindergarten and the early years of Elementary School. Instead of simply memorizing facts, our students learn about the world by actually experiencing it for themselves. They study plants and seeds by gardening in the school’s Children’s Garden. They study colors and vision by learning how to make rainbows, or mixing paints and seeing the results with their own eyes. They learn about numbers and fractions by moving around and dividing themselves into different groups and combinations. They explore acids and bases by combining baking soda and lemon juice to make their own volcanoes! These are lessons that they will never forget, and Waldorf students love science and math classes with their whole hearts. The math and science foundation they gain from Waldorf Education prepares them to go into any field they choose. A 2007 study found that, compared to students from non-Waldorf Schools, up to twice as many Waldorf students go on to study science at university.

Why Does Each Class Have One Main Teacher Throughout The Year?

Waldorf Elementary students are taught by a “homeroom teacher” who stays with the same class throughout the year and leads them through most of their lessons. The homeroom teacher system allows for very close bonds between teacher, student and parents. The teacher gets to know each student individually. The homeroom teacher is also in an ideal position to identify potential challenges early on, and to resolve them before they become major problems. Research has shown that this approach helps children build the self-esteem they need to thrive.

How Do Waldorf Students Fare Socially? How Is Discipline Handled?

Because of the Waldorf School of Jordan’s homeroom teacher system, the social issues that inevitably emerge among students and teachers are worked out in a healthy and nurturing way. Teachers encourage discussion and cultivate the children’s natural respect for others. The classroom resembles a healthy and developing family. As in any healthy family, the best in each individual is nurtured and the importance of human relationships is stressed. As a result, Waldorf students do very well socially. The evidence suggests that they function easily in social situations and are influential members of their peer groups as they move on to non-Waldorf pursuits in university and beyond.

The Waldorf approach to discipline varies depending on the age of the child and any unique needs he or she has. Parents are often surprised at how cooperative and fluid our classes are because the age-appropriate curriculum, the artistic activities, and the amount of movement in the day all help to keep students engaged in their learning. When needed, a teacher meets with parents to discuss discipline issues and formulate a plan.
