At the Waldorf School of Jordan, we believe that a love for learning begins with a sense of wonder—a curiosity that sparks the imagination and inspires children to explore the world around them. Nowhere is this more evident than in our Kindergarten Program, where young learners are immersed in storytelling, music, movement, and hands-on experiences that build the foundations for lifelong learning.
Our Waldorf Libraries—Book Nook and Bookmarks—are the beating heart of our school, offering students and faculty a wealth of knowledge, creativity, and exploration. From rare historical documents to whimsical joke books, our collections are designed to support independent thinking and nurture a deep connection with books. This year, our Kindergarten and Library teams joined forces to bring the joy of books even closer to our youngest learners through a truly collaborative, teacher-led initiative: the KG BookWorm Library.
A Teacher-Led Initiative Exemplifying Waldorf Culture
The KG BookWorm Library is more than just a reading corner—it is an empowered, teacher-driven project that highlights the values at the core of the Waldorf School of Jordan: collaboration, creativity, and a commitment to real, meaningful change.
Led by Ms. Mays Matarneh (KG Homeroom Teacher), in close collaboration with Ms. Bissan Al Hallaseh (Head Librarian) and Ms. Sandra Varoqua (Kindergarten Principal), this initiative was a genuine partnership between educators, not a top-down directive. Teachers, librarians, and school leaders worked together—brainstorming, designing, and implementing a space that would meet the real needs of young learners in a way that reflects the values of our school.
Special thanks go to Ms. Sania Alasker, whose artistic eye and thoughtful contributions helped shape the library’s inviting and child-centered design.
BookWorm Library: A Space for Exploration and Growth
Located in the KG Story Room, the KG BookWorm Library is a calm, inspiring space designed specifically for kindergarteners to develop a deep love for books in a way that is natural, joyful, and engaging.
Key features of the program include:
✅ A rotating selection of books curated from the Book Nook Library, refreshed each month to keep children engaged.
✅ Weekly classroom visits to encourage children to explore books of their choosing while learning how to handle them with care.
✅ A structured borrowing system where books remain within the Kindergarten environment, ensuring they are integrated into classroom learning.
✅ A focus on self-directed exploration, allowing children to select books based on their interests, fostering independence and curiosity.
More than just a library corner, the KG BookWorm Library serves as a gateway to a lifelong relationship with reading. Research consistently shows that early exposure to books strengthens language development, social-emotional skills, focus, and imagination. Through storytelling, singing, and book exploration, our kindergarteners are not just learning to read—they are learning to love reading.
Democratic School Governance in Action
One of the most powerful aspects of this initiative is how it came to be. The KG BookWorm Library was not the product of a top-down mandate—it was born out of the insight, experience, and creativity of our teachers and staff.
At the Waldorf School of Jordan, we believe that educators should be leaders, not just implementers of policy. Our democratic school governance model ensures that the people who know our students best—their teachers—are empowered to shape the learning environment in meaningful ways. The KG BookWorm Library is a perfect example of this philosophy in action.
By trusting and investing in our teachers’ expertise, we create a school culture that is dynamic, responsive, and forward-thinking. This project embodies our commitment to curiosity, creativity, and changemaking, and it demonstrates how our teachers are not just educators—they are innovators shaping the future of education.
An Open Invitation to Explore
The KG BookWorm Library is now open, and our kindergarteners are already diving into stories, exploring new worlds, and finding joy in books. This initiative is a testament to what is possible when passionate educators come together to create something truly meaningful.
To our students: May this space ignite your imagination and inspire you to dream, explore, and grow…
To our teachers and staff: Thank you for your dedication, creativity, and leadership in making this vision a reality…
And to our community: We invite you to celebrate this new addition to our school and continue supporting our mission of nurturing a lifelong love for learning…
📚💙 Welcome to the KG BookWorm Library—where curiosity, creativity, and collaboration come to life!
