Our Elementary Program is designed to help students develop individuality and freedom, balanced with cooperation and collaboration. Academic subjects such as math, reading, and writing are introduced in ways that nurture students’ natural curiosity and imagination. Subjects are brought to life through captivating stories and inspiring hands-on activities. Drama, painting, drawing and movement are used to lead students in learning beyond the memorization of facts. Students learn that even the most abstract concepts can be concretely grounded in the real world. They don’t just learn with their heads, but with their hearts and hands as well. That’s why Waldorf education is recognized the world over as wholesome and wholistic.
How Does the Waldorf School of Jordan put this focus on imaginative lifelong learning into practice in the classroom? The school day begins with a long, uninterrupted lesson. One subject is the focus, and the class deals with it in-depth each morning for several weeks at a time. This long main lesson, which may well run for two hours, allows the teacher to develop a wide variety of activities around the subject at hand. In the younger grades, lively rhythmic activities get the circulation going and bring children together as a group. They recite poems and songs connected with the main lesson, practice tongue twisters to limber-up speech, and work with various movement exercises designed to help them experience math and science concepts on a bodily level.
After the day’s main lesson which includes a review of earlier learning, students creatively record what they learned in their own special main lesson book, with their teacher suggesting ideas and approaches designed to stimulate their natural curiosity and reinforce the day’s lessons. Essentially, students in the early grades compose and illustrate their own textbooks, creating a record of the academic subjects they are covering along with related art, poetry and other creative elements. Watching how Waldorf students learn about the world is a truly magical experience––full of wonder, inspiration, and the lively energy of genuine exploration.
